✚ CULTURE SHOCK
// Ram Records ( UK )
Culture Shock was brought up in a musical household with both parents involved with Classical music, and always showed a healthy curiosity about music, listening to anything from Jazz to house. He first heard about drum and bass around ’96 on London’s pirate radio stations and at school where everyone talked about Jungle music being the cool new thing. In his own words, ‘it sounded totally alien’ and he was blown away. He started reading music technology magazines, managed to set up a basic studio and started experimenting.
Culture Shock’s first release happened thanks to a hook up with Dom Angus (Dom & Roland) though their parents who are friends and colleagues. The result was the 2004 ‘Vega EP’ on Moving Shadow. It was well received but unfortunately the seminal label stopped releasing music and it was another two years before James found another home with the legendary Ram Records.
Impressed by the production skills displayed on the Vega EP, Andy C followed the progress of the young producer and ended up signing him to his label, with the first track ‘The Bypass’ – one of Optical’s favourite tunes – appearing on 2006’s Dimension EP and getting tongues wagging on the scene.
He was then given the chance to make his own EP, and ‘the third stage’ was released in summer 2007. It included the suave ‘Rework’, produced in partnership with the Brookes Brothers, and a brilliant electro-breaks track ‘Asteroids’ that fits well with James’ open approach to music: “I’ve been into drum and bass for a long, long time – he recently told Knowlede magazine – That is great but it’s all about bringing in influences from elsewhere.I am really into all electronic music and I listen to a lot of techno and electro.”
With signing Culture shock to its prestigious stable, Ram are nurturing yet another talent destined to expend the boundaries of the scene.
// Viper Recordings ( AUS )
Hailing from Perth the epicenter of the Australasian drum and bass scene, ShockOne aka Karl Thomas has proved himself as one of the major talents in bass music today. He writes his music in a sweat box of a studio in an industrial area with air con blasting through a random door. He grew a beard this year which has been very well received.
2009 saw Shockone come of age with the release of ‘The Shockone EP’, featuring the seminal ‘Polygon’. This tune received major air play world wide with high rotation play listing on Australia’s Triple J radio and Radio 1’s Annie Mac penning it as ‘The biggest drum and bass tune out’. The EP’s three drum and bass tunes achieved the top 3 spots on beatports drum and bass chart, and ‘Adachigahara’s Theme’ stayed at number 1 on the dubstep chart for over a month, subsequently being voted as beatports number 1 all time classic dubstep tune. Following this Shockone released his remix of the Brookes Brothers epic ‘Crackdown’ on Viper recordings ‘Acts of madmen LP’ which was labeled “Album of the Week” on Zane Lowe BBC Radio 1. Shockone’s collaborations with Phetsta, ‘The Sun 2009’ and ‘Cyclones’ have also received high rotation on radio world wide.
Shockone is no stranger to accolades having taken out ‘best tune of the year’ at the Perth dance music awards 4 years in a row, ‘best drum and bass DJ’ 3 years in a row and ‘best producer’ 3 years in a row.
2010 could best be described as the year of the remix for Shockone. His remix discography reading like a who’s who of drum and bass and electronic music in general; Brookes brothers – Crackdown, Netsky- I refuse, Bcee – Help you, Chicane – Come back, Cutline – Die for you, Mutya Buena & Agent X – Fallin all receiving major DJ and radio support worldwide. 2010 also brings the release of the highly anticipated Shockone – ‘Re-fix’ EP, a collection of VIP’s and remixes of the massively successful ‘Shockone EP’.
One could be forgiven for wondering where Shockone has been for the last year but as they say the “Calm continueth not long without a storm.” as the much hyped ‘Crucify me’ pt’s I & II, the lead single to his debut album, drop this June. The official youtube promo trailer alone for this tune has gained 9000 views in 2 weeks.
On the touring front Shockone has just been announced as support for the ‘Karnivool’ Australian tour, as well as his own headline ‘Crucify me’ single tour.
Shockone has also just been put in charge of mixing the next ‘One Love dubstep invasion’ compilation CD due out later this year.
Shockone’s debut LP is due out for release late 2011. This long awaited solo album is sure to push boundaries, cross genres, max the envelope and so on.
